My buddy Neil and I refused to see Top Gun at first because a cute neighbor of ours, Jennifer, was head over heals in love with Val Kilmer … and we were jealous. We would tell her, “He ain’t all that, he’s got big teeth!”
Anyway, I finally broke down and saw the move in early 1987. Top Gun stayed in the theaters for almost a year. This was back in the days when movies didn’t come out on video – if you missed it in the theater, you had to wait for the television networks to pick it up. Once I saw it, I was hooked and immediately bought the soundtrack. I also fell in love with Kelly McGillis. (she has since hit the wall, hard!) LOL
Look at this list of actors:
Cast
Tom Cruise as Lt. Of course, I was one of those cool kids. From what I can remember, tight-rolling hit the St. Petersburg, Fl area in about 1986, and remained a fashion trend until about 1990.
Many have speculated just where the fad started. I believe it came from the boy-band craze surrounding “New Kids on the Block.”
Below, I have demonstrated the steps in properly tight rolling your trousers. Some kids back in the day used safety pins to hold the rolls in place, but that was a definite amateur way to do it. A properly tight-rolled pant leg would at least withstand the rigors of your first and second period classes before needing a refresh.
I also notice that the Old Navy pants I am wearing in the pictures were not made for tight rolling.
The best “pegged” cuffs were achieved on Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans, and Bugle Boy khakis. Some may also remember the Bugle Boy pants that revealed a little design on the underside of the pants, so when you tight-rolled them, you'd reveal a paisley pattern on the rollup.

Start by pulling the cuff out completely.

Next, fold over as far as possible without cutting off the circulation. If you have "cankles," tight rolling is not possible.

Roll cuffs up twice. Notice how the crease extends all the way up to the knee. This is important to achieve the proper "pegged" look.

Next, lose the socks! My first experience with a home system was at a friend's house in 1982. He had a ColecoVision and he and I were allowed to watch his older play "Pong," a stick and square ball version of tennis. His brother wouldn't let us play because he was a big, bad, game-hogging 8th-grader! Some things never change! LOL

It wasn't long after that I got my own game system, the legendary Atari 2600. It was the ultimate in home video game systems, complete with 2 joysticks, reset button, B&W or Color settings and wood-grain trim for the classy touch!

What is interesting to me is that in 1982, an Atari 2600 cost $200 and came with 2 controllers and 1 game. The game was either Pac Man or Combat, depending on the release date of the system. Also, the best games in those days would set you back about $50.

Guess what? The PlayStations of today cost around the same and so do the games!

My favorite Atari game was Pitfall, which was made by Activision (Activision was a group of disgruntled programmers who saw value in selling aftermarket games that fit the Atari platform ... this practice is still done today and is the main reason graphics and gameplay are so much better; competition breeds creativity and quality kids!).

I also enjoyed Space Invaders, Yar's Revenge and Centipede. My Dad and I were fans of the Pro Baseball, which had built-in crowd cheers when you hit a homerun! In addition, you had 2 team choices: Red or Blue. We would have some pretty heated battles. One of my favorite quirks about the Atari baseball was when a ground ball was hit to the 3rd baseman. You'd think it would be best to throw the ball directly to first base for the out, but with the slow processors of the day, that was a fairly involved command, therefore slow, and the runner always beat the throw. It was much faster to throw the ball from the 3rd baseman, to the second baseman, and then to the first baseman. For you sports fans, that's ruled a 5/4/3 "single out."

You could also throw a "wicked" slow curve ball in that game, and a fairly decent, and quite literal "changeup," by starting the ball fast by pulling "down" and then just before the pitch got to the batter, you yanked the stick "up" to slow the pitch down. I got that one past ole' Dad a few times!

Some comparisons....

Interesting note #1. There were no memory cards in those days to "save" your game. The only way to completely beat a game (we called it "flipping" the game) was to beg your parents to leave the Atari on overnight until the next day when you could resume play. There was also no "pause" feature, so you'd have to find a place in the game, like Pitfall for example, where the character could be left standing/sitting/squating and not be in danger. Crazy huh?

Interesting note #2. Most of the games back then gave you 3 "lives" and that's it. There was no "finding health" like in today's games.

Interesting note #3. There were no "easy" or "hard" modes. The game was the game. We were real men back then I tell ya!

Interesting note #4. If a game wouldn't load, you blew warm air (breath) into the cartridge to get it to work --Same as with the more modern games for Gameboy! The lesson there must be that a little hot air can fix anything.

Interesting note #5. In 1982, if you couldn't get through a certain difficult section or level of the game; it was because something was wrong with the controller, not you! (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) In 2007, I play games with my kids, and have found that the controller is still at fault everytime I can't beat a level! I do not recall the first time I ever ate there, but I do recall my first taste of the famous, "chilito."

It was a summer Sunday evening in 1986. I was in the youth building at my home church, Liberty Baptist, located on 4th street in St. Petersburg, FL. There's a Taco Bell just a block down.
A few of my buddies and I were hanging out prior to the evening services playing ping-pong, and decided to make a quick "Run For The Border."

We all took off on foot and hit the drive-thru (yeah, we thought it was funny to "walk" thru the "drive" thru ... Gen X nerds!). My normal order in those days would have been 2 soft tacos and a small drink for just under $2 total. (some may recall Taco Bell's big promo in those days was their 59/69/79 menu where every menu item was either $.59 $.69 or $.79.

Anyway, this particular evening they had just rolled out a promo for the new "chilito" for $.79.
Interestingly enough, in 1986, the whole "Value Meal" concept had not yet been adopted by the Taco Bell chain; they were still into promoting individual items.
I decided to give it a try and I ordered 2 chilitos.
That was the beginning of a taste-bud obsession that still exists today!

The chilito is the simplest form of Mexi-Fast food. It is a super-soft flour tortilla, lots of melted cheese, and some chili-flavored meat. Add a little mild taco sauce, and you're in taste bud heaven!

To this day, I never order anything else from the Bell. When I am "thinking outside the bun," I'm dreaming of gobs of melted cheese and chili inside a multi-layered tortilla.

Here's some trivia for you:
Currently, the chilito is named the "chili cheese burrito" because the word "chilito" means "penis" in certain slang Spanish dialects! Ha!
Also, you will very rarely find the chili cheese burrito advertised on the actual published menu at your local Taco Bell. In fact, according to this interesting website: www.chilicheese.org, only 12% of Taco Bells nationwide will even make one for you. I believe this figure to be a bit low because I buy them quite frequently at stores located in Indiana and Illinois.

I will say, however, that it is NOT listed on the published menu. I've had to ask for it by name, and in some cases, the kid at the register has had to get a manager to confirm what a chili cheese burrito actually is, it's availability, cost and how to ring it up!

Why has the chilito been sent to the literal back burner in the Taco Bell world? Some speculate that it just was not popular enough. Others think it's due to the bad press over the reference to the male member. Still others conclude its fat content is too high for today's health conscious fast food consumer. (read that again and see it that is funny to you as it is to me! LOL)

To "wrap" this up...if you all could share with me two things:

(1) do you like chili cheese burritos?

(2) what do you pay for them in your state or town? I find the prices range from $1.29 to $1.49.

A-Ha, "Take On Me" 1986

From Wikipedia...
"Take on Me" was estimated to have sold 7-9 million copies worldwide; it peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number two in the UK Singles Chart. He possessed the perfect physique, was a tremendous athlete, was loaded with charisma and ultimately became the second youngest world champion when he would capture the industry’s top jewel at the time, the National Wrestling Alliance’s world title.
Even in high school, Kerry had a physique that most bodybuilders would be envious of, was a standout football player, and set junior and national records with the discus. Kerry would go on to receive scholarships to play both football and track at the University of Houston. While red-shirting in football, Kerry continued to excel in track, where he triumphed at the Texas Relays in the discus throwing event.
Kerry, like his older brothers Kevin and David, dropped out of college after his first year to begin his career in professional wrestling in 1979. At the age of 22, Kerry nearly captured the NWA World Championship from Ric Flair at Reunion Arena in a best 2 of 3 falls match in 1982, before over 10,000 wrestling fans. Many wrestling insiders feel this match truly set Kerry in the elite circle of true superstars within the industry. From this point on, his father, World Class owner Jack Adkisson, referred to Kerry as “the uncrowned world champion”. Later in 1982, during his Christmas cage match with world champion Flair, the legendary Von Erich-Freebird feud was born as guest referee Michael Hayes and cage door keeper Terry Gordy turned on Kerry during the match, ultimately costing Von Erich the title.
Throughout 1983, Kerry, along with brothers Kevin and David, feuded with the Fabulous Freebirds. As the feud became more intense between the two tandems, ticket sales and television viewership went through the roof.
By the end of 1983, Kerry was considered by both his peers and wrestling insiders as one of the top five workers within the industry and also one of the most popular -- attaining the admiration of a rock star, having recently married and having the world at his command, it seemed his life was too good to be true.
On a cold Texas morning on February 10, 1984, Kerry was awakened by a phone call from his sister-in-law, who broke the news that his older brother David had been found dead in his hotel room in Tokyo, Japan. Suddenly the charmed life Kerry had been leading abruptly came to a screeching halt.
On May 6, 1984, in front of over 32,000 emotional fans in Texas Stadium, Kerry main-evented World Class’ biggest card ever: the Parade of Champions, an event dedicated to the memory of brother David. At the ripe age of 24, Kerry Von Erich became the second youngest NWA World champion (Lou Thesz was the youngest at 21 in 1937) when he defeated champion Ric Flair with a backslide in a near-13 minute match, which was cut considerably short compared to their previous battles as the temperature on the Texas Stadium field reached 110 degrees on this particular day.
As Von Erich held the belt for all to see, the Texas crowd shamelessly shed tears as their beloved Kerry had triumphed on a day that was dedicated to everyone’s beloved “Yellow Rose of Texas”. However, Kerry’s reign (which was a political favor to Jack Adkisson by the NWA) would prove to be short-lived as he lost the title back to Flair on May 24, 1984 in Yokosuka, Japan.
Kerry and Flair would continue to sell out arenas everywhere they wrestled, as World Class Championship Wrestling and the Von Erich name remained strong throughout 1985. Honolulu, St. Louis, Texas and Louisiana would be just some of the areas treated to “broadways” (time limit draws, usually going a full hour) between the two legends.
On June 4, 1986, Kerry was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in which he hit a parked police car. The accident would keep Kerry away from regular in-ring competition for nearly 17 months, and would ultimately cost him the majority of his right foot.
Due to the steep decline in business in the World Class promotion during his leave, and seeing the pressures it was putting on his brother Kevin to be the lone wrestling Von Erich brother (Mike had passed away in April 1987), Kerry returned to wrestling on a full-time basis in November 1987. He had initially attempted a comeback in February 1987 against in-ring nemesis and real-life best friend Brian Adias. However, it was this match that was rumored to be the cause of Kerry re-injuring the foot and ankle causing a major setback in his return to the ring.
Unbeknownst to most wrestlers and insiders, when Kerry made his full-time return to the ring in late 1987, he would wrestle on a prosthetic right foot. Today fans would see such a feat as courageous, but the issue embarrassed Kerry -- so much so that he often showered with his wrestling boots on so that others would not find out about his condition.
Rumors about the amputation started circulating within the industry in late 1988, when Colonel DeBeers accidentally pulled off Kerry's right boot during a match in Las Vegas on November 12, revealing to those in attendance that night his handicap.
Kerry would recapture a world’s title when he defeated “Latin Heartthrob” Al Perez for the World Class Wrestling Association’s world title on March 6, 1988. Kerry would swap the title with both Jerry “The King” Lawler and Tatsumi Fujinami during 1988, before the title was finally eliminated altogether by then-American Wrestling Association champion Lawler, who captured the WCWA belt with a victory over Kerry in a title unification match at Superclash III held in December of that year in Chicago, Illinois.
Kerry’s next big move would occur in the Summer of 1990 when he entered the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he would be known simply as the Texas Tornado. Subbing for an injured Brutus Beefcake, Kerry won the prestigious WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight championship when he defeated “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig at Summerslam 1990.
Kerry's reign, however, would be brief, and the painkiller addiction he had developed as a result of his injury began to catch up with him. At his father’s urging, Kerry entered drug rehabilitation in February of 1992. While the treatment initially seemed to do Kerry some good (please see the interview which was done right after his stint in rehab), his recovery was short-lived. He was eventually let go by the WWF in the summer and returned to Dallas, where he soon began wrestling for Grey Pierson's GWF.
Tragically, on February 18, 1993, Kerry became despondent after learning he had been indicted on a drug possession charge stemming from an arrest the previous month. As he was already on probation for ten years due to another charge, a jail sentence was not to be ruled out this time.
Kerry’s father Fritz discovered his son's body behind his ranch (where the Von Erichs grew up) with a self-inflicted gunshot through his heart. Kerry was only 33 years old.

By popular demand: MacGyver!

I love MacGyver! This is one of my top 5 favorite shows from the 80s.
Here is a description from Wikipedia:

MacGyver is an American adventure television series, produced in Canada, about a laid-back, extremely resourceful secret agent, played by Richard Dean Anderson. The series was created by Lee David Zlotoff and executive produced by Henry Winkler and John Rich. It ran for seven seasons from September 29, 1985 to May 21, 1992 on the ABC network and filmed primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Of the 139 one-hour episodes, three had two parts. Additionally, two made-for-TV movies were produced in 1994.

Angus MacGyver's main asset is his practical application of scientific knowledge and inventive use of common items—along with his ever-present Swiss Army knife and duct tape and the usual coincidence of being locked up in a room full of useful materials. The clever solutions MacGyver implemented to seemingly intractable problems—often in life-or-death situations requiring him to improvise complex devices in a matter of minutes—were a major attraction of the show, which was praised for generating interest in engineering[1] as well as providing entertaining storylines. All of MacGyver's exploits on the show were ostensibly vetted to be based on real scientific principles (even though, the creators acknowledged, in real life one would have to be extraordinarily lucky for most of MacGyver's ideas to succeed). In the few cases where MacGyver used household chemicals to create poisons, explosives or other things deemed too dangerous to be accurately described for public consumption, details were intentionally altered or vague.

The use of ordinary household items to jury rig devices shows an influence from The A-Team (though MacGyver eschewed firearms). The idea has entered U.S. popular culture; such constructions are referred to as "MacGyverisms" (a term first used in episode 3 of season 2, "Twice Stung").

In an August 2007 survey commissioned by the McCormick Tribune Foundation, Americans polled voted MacGyver as the favourite fictional hero they would want to have if they were ever caught in an emergency. [2]

The thing I always admired about Mac was that he was a likeable, non-threatening, non-intimidating hero. He wasn't too good looking, yet not ugly. He wasn't too cool, but definitely not nerdy. He was a tough guy, yet always hurt his hand when he punched a bad guy... and he was good with the chicks, but not so good. That's pretty much the story of my own life methinks! ...Now, if I could just figure out how to make my truck run on bubble gum and rubbing alcohol instead of gasoline...LOL

Bill Elliot: Greatest NASCAR Driver 1985

The 1985 season turned out to be a good one for NASCAR fans.
For the first time, Winston began a program that would award an unheard of one million dollars to any driver that could win three of the four crown jewels of NASCAR, including the Daytona 500 (the most prestigious race), the Winston 500 (the fastest race), the Coca-Cola World 600 (the longest race), and the Southern 500 (the oldest race). It had only been done twice in NASCAR history, and was so rare that R.J. Reynolds did not budget the money for its Winston Cup sponsorship.
However, a red head from Georgia in a red Thunderbird proved that was a mistake in judgment. Bill Elliott began the season by winning the pole for the Daytona 500 and dominating the race, leading 136 of the 200 laps on the way to victory. His next charge toward fame came at Talladega in the Winston 500. On lap 48 of 188, however, an oil line came loose on Elliott's car and he lost nearly two laps while having it repaired.

Elliott returned to the track, and in less than 100 laps, made up enough ground to recapture the lead and win the Winston 500. Remember, Talladega is a superspeedway where speeds exceed 200 mph!
Bill was well on his way: 2 races down with 2 wins. Only one more win out of 2 races and Bill would be the first Million dollar winner in NASCAR history.

Elliott's first shot at the million-dollar prize came at the Coca-Cola World 600, but mechanical problems knocked him out of the race. His final chance came at Darlington, in the Southern 500. Elliott started from the pole, but battled with Cale Yarborough throughout the race for the lead until Cale's car erupted in smoke from a broken power steering line. Elliott took the lead and went on to win the first Winston Million. Elliot also became the first ever NASCAR driver to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Another interesting fact is that just 5 years prior, in 1980, Elliot almost lost his racing career due to lack of sponsorship and financing. That would never be a problem for him again.

Bill Elliot's 1985 Ford Thunderbird

Bounty Bar !!! 1989

Do you miss the Bounty Bar? ....Luscious coconut covered in either milk or dark chocolate?
In 1989 I was working for Kash-N-Karry Grocery Store as a produce clerk.
I can remember that my favorite snack on a break was a dark chocolate Bounty Bar washed down with chocolate milk. (this of course was back in the days when my metabolism was a bit faster, LOL)

I dunno about you, but Mounds Bars just were not as sweet and moist. But Bounty: now that was the candy bar worth getting jittery over!

Oddly enough, the Bounty Bar, which was distributed by the Mars Candy Co., only lasted 2 years in the United States market before it was discontinued.
In his book, "The Emperors of Chocolate," Joel Glenn Brenner states:

Mars and Hershey - the Candy Kings, as they're known to insiders - can readily attest to Americans' affinity for nostalgic candy. Take Mars's Bounty bar, for example. In 1988, Hershey turned the candy world upside down when it unexpectedly acquired the U.S. division of Peter Paul/Cadbury, maker of Mounds, Almond Joy and York Peppermint Patties. To compete with Hershey's new muscle, Mars introduced the Bounty bar in 1989, a chocolate-covered coconut bar reminiscent of Mounds. But Bounty failed after just two years, even though every blind taste test Mars conducted showed consumers preferred it 2 to 1 over the competition.

Brenner goes on to explain that the Bounty Bar failed because Americans on the whole, hold extreme nostalgia when it comes to candy and gravitate towards familiar names and tastes, of which Mounds is one. Even though Bounty tasted better, it didn't hold the gravitas of the Mounds Bar.
Mounds did have the edge in marketing in the 1980s ... I bet you can remember the Mounds commercials can't you?
C'mon, say it with me; "Almond Joy got nuts....Mounds don't"
Remember that?
And, then, of course, us creative 80s-mullet-topped boys would impress the chicks with our own version:
"Boys got nuts ... girls don't"
Bwahahahah! It's a wonder how we ever got married ain't it?

Oddly enough, Bounty Bars could be making a comeback. In 2006, this author found some (milk chocolate only) in a Shell Gas Station food mart on the south side of Chicago. I was extremely excited and bought 5 of them. Upon checking out with my chocolate milk in tow, I asked the clerk (I had to shout through bullet-proof glass) if he knew where they got them from.
He gave me a blank stare and with a thick Pakistani accent said, "det will be six dullers and derty-cents, tank you, com agin."
The sugary-coconut was delightful, but short-lived.
Today, Bounty is one of the best selling candy bars in Australia and throughout much of Europe.
If anyone from the Mars Company is reading this (yeah, wishful thinking)...you can contact me for some fresh marketing ideas ... I'll accept dark chocolate Bounty Bars in lieu of salary.

My Favorite 80s Music

Cutting Crew -- I just Died In Your Arms Tonight.

Quite possibly the greatest 80s song of all!
(and the video ain't too bad either)

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Michael J.
